Robert E. previous hit Lee  next hit was the commanding General of the Confederate Army in the Civil War. previous hit Lee  next hit was born in Westmoreland previous hit County  next hit, Virginia, in 1807. His father was Major General Henry previous hit Lee  next hit III ("Light Horse Harry"). previous hit Lee  next hit attended West Point, graduating at the top of his class. previous hit Lee  next hit was opposed to the succession of the southern states; however, he stood by his native state. After the Civil War previous hit Lee  next hit became the President of Washington College (present day Washington and previous hit Lee  next hit University) in 1865 and held that position till his death. previous hit Lee  next hit used his position as president of the college to show support Johnson's reconstruction plan.

Scope and Content

The Robert E. previous hit Lee  next hit Speech is a photocopy of a farewell address (General Order No. 9) to the Army of Northern Virginia, after his surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox, April 10, 1865. It may have been copied by a soldier from an original.
